What does it do?
Titanium dioxide can play a variety of roles in various oral care products. In some toothpastes, it is used in very low concentrations, making the color of the toothpaste white, which is more pleasant for many consumers to use.
How is it made?
Our management model guides us in selecting ingredients that are processed in ways that support our philosophy of human and environmental health.
Titanium dioxide is an abundant element in the earth's crust and occurs in nature as ilmenite ore. The ore is subjected to a multi-step purification process where it is liquefied at high temperatures, then dried and ground to form a white powder material that is highly purified and can be added as an oral and personal care ingredient.
What are the options?
An alternative to the use of natural titanium dioxide is the use of synthetic dyes, which do not meet our criteria for a natural, sustainable and responsible management model. Tom's of Maine does offer a variety of toothpaste options that do not contain titanium dioxide.
Is this the right choice for me?
Titanium dioxide has a long history of safe use as an FDA-approved colorant in personal and oral care products in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries1. It is also approved for use as a colorant in food and food contact materials. There is controversy about the safety of titanium dioxide nanoparticles, especially when they are airborne. The titanium dioxide we use is not considered to be nanoscale and the composition is bonded so the particles present are not airborne. Therefore, there is no risk of inhalation with our products containing this ingredient.
